Warsaw itinerary in 2 days

Day 1
Warsaw
Warsaw pretty much got destroyed by the Germans during World War ll. The communists rebuilt it in typical architecture of the communist era so most of the city is not that attractive aesthetically. Over the last few years the government has been rebuilding certain parts of the city and has done a nice job including monuments and memorials to the Holocaust.

Morning
We arrived in Warsaw and met our private guide, Chris Skutela of Private Tours Krakow. He was our guide and driver during our trip to Poland.
We checked into the beautiful Mamaison Hotel Le Regina, located in the heart of Old Town.

Afternoon
Chris took us for a tour of Old Town. This area was originally built in the 12th and 13th century but was destroyed by the Germans during World War ll. Today the Polish government has rebuilt the area to resemble the original architecture, including the Royal Castle, palaces and market square. This area is completely pedestrian friendly and is lined with shops and restaurants.

From there, we drove to New Town which was originally built in the 14th century. Here too most of the buildings had to be rebuilt after World War ll but it is quite a contrast to Old Town in terms of architecture and feel. It is quite bland and is much quieter. The main sights are a few churches.

Evening
We had an early dinner at a perogi restaurant in Old Town and headed to bed.

Day 2
Morning
We started our day with a visit to the newly opened POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. This museum was built on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto. A millennium of Polish Jewish history is explained in this excellent and engaging museum.

Afternoon
This afternoon we toured the Jewish sites including the Ghetto area, the meaningful memorials to the Holocaust, the memorial to the Warsaw Gehetto Uprising, the large Jewish cemetery, and the area where the Jews were gathered to be deported to the concentration camps. All of these were very moving and meaningful experiences.

Toward the late afternoon we went to the observation deck of the Palace of Culture and Science to see a 360 degree view of the city.
Evening
We had a nice dinner in Old Town to end our visit in Warsaw.

Day 3
​
After breakfast we continued our tour in Krakow. See my Krakow itinerary in 3 days.
Guides and Tours
We hired a private guide, Christopher Skutela, for the duration of our trip. Chris was lovely and very knowledgeable on the history of Poland and in particular its Jewish history. He helped us plan the itinerary and was very accommodating and sensitive to our needs. He gave us a very balanced itinerary. We really enjoyed our time with him.
​
He picked us up from the airport and drove us around in his clean and comfortable car. He was always punctual. I highly recommend Chris for a tour of Poland.

My friends and I had been talking about going to Poland for a number of years. We were interested in doing a Jewish Heritage trip to learn more about the Holocaust and the history of the Jews in Poland. We hired a private guide to organize an itinerary. It worked out really well. We not only had a meaningful and emotional experience but we also got to enjoy some of the beautiful sites of modern day Poland.
